Neurological rehabilitation in Sydney is vitally important for people with traumatic brain injury, stroke, aneurism and other neurological conditions. It can bring hope to people who may otherwise lose all hope and lead to significant improvements in quality of life.
We have recently been working with the Rural Rehabilitation Research on Brain Injury (RRRBI) group from Charles Sturt University in NSW to investigate how well brain injury rehabilitation services are being delivered in rural and remote NSW. The findings from a series of semi-structured interviews with people with ABI and their families and with rural and remote NSW health, rehabilitation and support services staff have highlighted some key issues.
Comprehensive Neurological Rehabilitation in Sydney
There is a need for alternative innovative models that offer flexibility and choice, 7 day rehabilitation, a high level of professional expertise, family involvement as equal partners in care, a culture of hope and resilience, adequate funding and recruiting and retention of appropriate staff and access to modern facilities. It is also crucial that we understand and acknowledge the trauma that people experience when their family member experiences an ABI, as this often has a direct impact on their own wellbeing.
